Roof shingles are a covering consisting of individual overlapping asphalt elements. These elements are typically flat, rectangular shapes laid in courses from the bottom edge of the roof up, with each successive course overlapping the joints below. Shingles are available in several styles, designs, colors, and durability and are available from many different manufacturers.

1. When should I replace my shingles?

We may find that repairs to your roof is all that is required, but there comes a time when shingles have lost the ability to properly protect your home. While a repair job can often be more convenient and more cost-efficient, often it is wise not to spend money on a repair when it should be replaced.

2. Can I go over my old shingles?

In the state of Florida, you are allowed to “roof over” one time with a second roof, but we do not feel this is a good idea. Doing so locks in more moisture due to the high humidity in this state. It also prevents the ability to inspect the roof wood decking for any rotten or damaged wood in order to replace it.

3. Should I consider metal or tile?

Metal or Tile of course costs more than shingles, but, when the budget allows, it is a better way to go. They add value to the home and longer life to the roof.

4. How long will the job take?

Most shingle roofs can be completed within one or two days.

5. What underlayment should I choose?

This is a very important question, as of January 1st 2021, the state of Florida has changed the building codes requirements. Liberty Roofing of Central Florida uses a premium underlayment on all shingle roofs which is a “peel & stick” product that does not have to be nailed down but adheres directly to the roof deck. Some insurance companies offer a discount when this product is used.
